Translated by “paper island” in local language, the Koh Lipde in Thailand, is an island in the Adang-Rawi Archipelago of the Andaman Sea, located in Satun province. An island in the south of Malaysia with the shape of a crescent moon not so far from the island of Langkawi.


There are 700 permanent inhabitants on the island of Koh Lipe, these are the Chao Leh, nicknamed “Gypsies of the sea“. It is easier to go around the island in less than 2 hours by foot, because it has an area of ​​2 km2.


It has beautiful beaches and fine sand without forgetting the crystal clear waters that made it very popular. There are all sorts of relaxing activities such as diving, snorkeling, etc. Sunset Beach, Sunrise Beach and Pattaya Beach are the three main beaches on the island. How to go to Koh Lipe?

There is no other way to reach Koh Lipe except with a boat.

You can join Koh Lipe from the western islands: Koh Tao, Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.

Many agencies offer the trip on site. There are stages that almost never finish, as well as long waiting times, it’s a very long journey. To reach the mainland in Surat thani, it would be best to take a ferry. Once in Surat thani you will take a bus to Hat Yai station, from this new destination you will take a new bus to the port of Park Bara and the speed boat will help you make the last trip to Koh Lipe.

You can also reach Koh Lipe from Krabi, Phuket or Koh Lanta.


How to move on Koh Lipe Island?

The most suitable way to go around Koh Lipe is by walk. By foot, you can explore the entire island because it is small in area. Some motorbikes allow you to go to the neighboring islands, otherwise no vehicle is available for the tour of the island.


The Beaches of Koh Lipe

Sunset Beach

It is northwest and off the walking street is the Sunset Beach. A beach that does not have to many boats, very beautiful and calm, where you can watch beautiful sunsets.


Sunrise Beach

It is a splendid setting with turquoise water and white sand, a pure beauty located to the east. This wonder has recently lost its splendor, because of the boats that park and waste (bags, bottles) everywhere. To have a little more peace and enjoy nature, it will be necessary to go a little further north. It will be more pleasant to communicate with the inhabitants of the village because of their proximity to the beach.


Pattaya Beach

It is the beach which abounds with more people, located in the southwest. There is almost everything for you to feel very comfortable, we can mention among others restaurants, bars, cafes, diving agencies, hairdressing salons, massage… This is the intersection of arrivals and departures on the island.


What to do in Koh Lipe

There are many kinds of activities you can do on Koh Lipe Island.



Ask at the reception of your hotel where to go, where to rent the equipment and get an idea of the prices offered, some dive centers also rent equipment (mask, tube, fins etc.).



Packages are offered by several diving centers.



This is a great activity ! Many hotels or dive centers rent kayaks by hours or by days. Rent it for a couple of hours and go around the island. You can also reach the beautiful small islands next to koh Lipe.


Where to eat in Koh Lipe?

Fish and seafood are very expensive and are often not very good. There are many restaurants in the main pedestrian street “Walking Street“, so you have a lot of choice.


  • With 12 euros per person you can have fish and shellfish on the barbecue.
  • There is also Thai rice, noodles, pad Thai which are local specialties for a cheap price (around 4-5 euros).


Where to stay in Koh Lipe?

Bungalows are available everywhere on the beach, you can find some for at least 15 euros.  Prices go up in high season, that’s why it’s best to make a reservation when you see a tempting offer on the internet.


Essential information about Koh Lipe

Before landing on the island, better refuel your favorite sun creams or sweets, so as not to buy the most expensive one once on the island. There are only two “7 eleven” mini markets on the island.

The doors of some hotels close in low season (May to October).

The Internet connection on the island is not really good.
