This Boutique hotel offers traditional service and opulence with a contemporary edge, making it a favourite. Expect attentive service and outstanding facilities, including an Italian vision design blended with a local twist and modern aesthetic to standing elegantly as the fourth hotel in The House Collective.
“The great advantage of a hotel is that it is a refuge from home life.”
A nod to its historic lane-house location, The Middle House name aims for many things – its blend of hotel and residences, its perfect setting in the centre of Shanghai, and its place among Swire’s The House Collective. All come together, for a composed sense of culture.
We can not talk about The Midlle House Shanghai without speaking about Piero Lissoni. He is the renowned architect and founder of Lissoni Architettura in Milan.
Lissoni is known for his use of sleek, bold lines and clean silhouettes to redefine modern spaces. His design efforts extend to The Middle House’s exterior façade, as well as the interiors of all its public spaces, guest rooms and residences.
The hotel’s exterior façade features a series of round aluminum louvers, which provide shade and privacy for guest rooms while creating a textured aesthetic that visually distinguishes the hotel’s two towers from surrounding developments. While louvers with their functional, uniform slats are a familiar sight in Shanghainese architecture, using round frames gives them a refreshing new spin.
While Lissoni’s signature is apparent in the subtle yet impactful combinations of bold lines, materials and colours, the overall theme is enhanced by décor and custom furnishing inspired by Shanghai’s culture of arts and craftsmanship, providing an intriguing marriage of old and new.
For interior spaces, Italian designer Lissoni has taken inspiration from Shanghai’s rich heritage of craftsmanship and culture, marrying his minimalist style with classical Shanghainese elements.
Drawing from his decades of experience reshaping contemporary Italian furniture, Lissoni has created modern reinterpretations of traditional Chinese furniture for the guest rooms, including oriental-style nightstands, contemporary table lamps and wall-to-wall benches in the living area.
For the spacious residences, sliding wood panels facilitate a flexible living space. A warm and inviting colour scheme of white and cream is accented by bright pops of colour in the furnishings and décor, while the bathroom floor is paved in rich dark ceramic parquet tiles with brushed bamboo textures.
THE ROOMS & RESIDENCE
Décor is sleek, contemporary and smart with decorative touches alluding to the Chinese culture. Beds are sumptuously comfortable.
Rooms and residences are generously equipped. You can help yourself to coffee, fine tea and soft drinks from the minibar and fruits from a daily-replenished platter.Tech-wise, each room has a really beautiful speaker; a television with a range of international channels; a tablet with controls for the curtains, lights and television; conveniently placed plug and USB sockets.Rooms and residences are extraordinarily large for Shanghai.
We stayed in the Residence 110, named after its size (110sqm). This two-bedroom residence is the ultimate home-away-from-home in the heart of Shanghai.
Ample space for working and relaxing, luxury facilities and all personalised services allowed us to make the most of Shanghai living.
We really appreciated all its amenities : LED TV + home theatre system, full kitchen with microwave, refrigerator, washer and dryer, electronic stove with hood, capsule coffee machine, dish washing machine, yoga mat, bathroom ceramic ware, etc…
Staying in this residence also allowed us to have access at the “at-home” programme : a Guest Experience team helped us to settle in with an at home starter kit including our preferred household items and our favorite drinks and snacks.
